Before You Start Troubleshooting

Before you move on to the solution steps, you need to make sure whether that the issue is occurring in your company file or your QuickBooks software is having some issues. You also need to make sure that your QuickBooks is updated to the latest version.

  • Go to the desktop and press and hold the CTRL key while double-click on QB icon. Note: Don’t release the CTRL key until the No Company Open windows open.

  • From the main menu of QuickBooks, go to File > Open or restore company.
  • Choose the appropriate type of file that you are trying to open.

Solution 2: Prevent QuickBooks Desktop Windows from Automatically Opening

If multiple windows are opened in your company file then try to restrict them from opening automatically.

  • From the No Company Open section, click on the company file.
  • Now, press and hold the ALT key and then click on Open.Note:If you get a log in window then provide the correct username and password, press and hold the ALT key and select OK. Do not release the ALT key until the company file gets opened completely or you get any error message.

Solution 3: Rename the .TLG and .ND Extensions on Your QuickBooks Company Files

The TLG and ND files are two configuration files that are very important to open a company file. If these files gets damaged, you can face various issues. The issue can be resolved by renaming old and damaged configuration files.

  • Open the File Explorer by pressing Windows + E
  • Navigate to the folder where QuickBooks company files are saved.
  • Right click on the TLG and ND files one by one and click on Rename from the drop-down lists.
  • Rename the file names to [company file name] OLD.qbw.tlg and [company file name]OLD.nd.

Solution 4: Copy the QuickBooks Company File to a New Location

If your company file is stored on a network drive then try to copy it to your local drive and then try to open it.If the file gets opened from your local system then it means there are some issues with your network configuration and you have to troubleshoot your network configuration.   • Create a new folder in the C:\
  • Navigate to the folder where company file is located.

Solution 5: Check the Properties and File Extension

  • Open the File Explorer by pressing Windows + E
  • Go to the folder where your company file is located.
  • Right-click on your company file and then select Properties from the drop-down options.
  • In the Properties tab, the Type of File should be QuickBooks Company File and it’s file size should be at least 7MB.
  • Go to Advanced tab and make sure that Compress and Encrypt checkboxes are unmarked.

Solution 6: Rename the QuickBooks Company File

  • Open the File Explorer by pressing Windows + E
  • Go to the folder where your company file is located.
  • Right-click on your company file and then select Rename.
  • Modify the file name and the name should not contain more than 3 letters. Important:The original file extensions should be there in the name(.qbw, .qbb, etc)
  • Rename the .TLG file as well using the same steps.

Note: If the file is not showing any icon or 3 letter extension or if it shows an incorrect icon then you need to edit the file extension as well.
